I read your front page ?Arts cash squeezed as sponsorship plummets? with interest (ArtsProfessional issue 25, May 6).
I work for a small company in Kent that sells scientific apparatus to schools and colleges. We have been working with an artist who is using one of our Van der Graaff generators to produce artwork. We gave him a special microscope to study this work in detail, and it is leading to all sorts of developments in art, science and industry. The sponsorship figures you report are interesting in that they seem to miss out on some of the grass roots level initiatives taking place. We have donated equipment purely because we are so impressed by the work and inventiveness of our artist friend. It is refreshing and stimulating to think that the motivation for all of us is curiosity, lateral thinking and creativity.
