Arts minister Tessa Jowell has attributed a 36% reduction in domestic burglary and 18% reduction in ?youth crime? on some high crime estates during summer 2000 to a scheme offering 13-17 year old residents constructive activities during the holidays.
The Summer Splash scheme, run by the Youth Justice Board with cash from the National Lottery?s New Opportunities Fund, includes drama, art tuition, music workshops and DJ classes alongside sports activities. A boost of £12m this year will enable the scheme to expand from 65 projects to 300, and support a new development of 300 projects for the 9-12 age-range. ?Engaging youngsters in sport or the arts can give them the tools they need to make a success of their lives and keep them away from crime?, the minister said.
