The world premiere of ?Festus?, a new community opera on the theme of the multiethnic traditions of feasting, is being performed at Glasgow?s Tramway and Edinburgh?s Traverse Theatre this month.
The opera has resulted from a collaboration between the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), Edinburgh?s Grindlay Court Centre and Glasgow?s community arts initiative Project Ability. The performances are by 10 adults with learning disabilities, together with professional artists and players from the SCO, and are the culmination of a project which began in October last year. This opera is the first of its kind in the UK, and is funded by the Scottish Arts Council and The Scottish Executive, and sponsored by State Street Corporation. The SCO and Grindlay Court Centre have been working together for over five years since their first project, Broughton Bells, in 1996.
