The Scottish Arts Council (SAC) is undertaking a study of the arts and older people, within the context of lifelong learning, to provide an insight into the barriers associated with them participating in the arts. In a BBC News Online poll, where users voted on which UK city should be European City of Culture, the clear winner was the Newcastle and Gateshead bid, for which 17.5% of the votes were cast. Second was Liverpool, with 14%; third Oxford with 11.9%; and bottom was Bradford with 3.3% of the vote.

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has increased its funding of Escape Artists to support the Company?s work in young offender institutions. The £70,000 award brings the total grant awarded to Escape Artists to £180,000 over 3 years.

Arts organisations are being invited to try out online survey software called Quask, which claims to help users reduce their survey costs and improve their research methodologies and response rates. The US-based National Arts Marketing Project has launched a new website containing practical marketing information aimed at not-for-profit arts organisations, as well as resources for teachers and students of arts management. w: http://www.artsmarketing.org

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) has announced a new exclusive national broadcasting partnership with BBC Radio 3. In a doubling of the BBC?s previous commitment to the CBSO, the new partnership guarantees that at least ten performances will be recorded for broadcast over the next year, with additional streaming for 7 days on the BBC?s website.

The closing date for applications for this year?s AHRB ?Changing Places: hosted visits scheme?, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board, is April 30.
