A £9m state-of-the-art gallery has been opened in Oldham, marking the completion of the first phase of Oldham Council?s plans to develop a Cultural Quarter in the town.
The Gallery will house Oldham?s diverse collection of art, social and industrial history, natural history and decorative arts, alongside newly commissioned and contemporary art, touring exhibitions and work produced by local communities. A glass bridge links the town?s original Victorian Gallery with the new building, which has been designed to meet the environmental standards needed to host international exhibitions. Two of the opening exhibitions, ?Sussed? and ?Consequences?, examine how people should set about fulfilling their needs with the minimum impact on society and each other, and are based around issues of ?sustainable development?, which will be a recurring theme throughout the Gallery?s five year exhibition and audience development programme.
