Strategies designed to support and encourage the use of arts in healthcare settings have been launched simultaneously by Arts Council England (ACE) and the Department of Health (DoH). Arts health and wellbeing: a framework for partnership outlines the ways in which ACE will work with DoH and healthcare providers to improve health and enhance healthcare environments.
It cites the positive part the arts can play in achieving health outcomes from improving public health and healthcare environments, to increasing staff retention and making a positive impact on the lives of healthcare professionals. The document lists five main ways in which ACE intends to work with health providers: healthy communities, the built environment, children and young people, workforce development, and advocacy and resource development. The launch event, also saw the publication of a joint prospectus for arts in health from DoH and ACE which lists more than 300 case studies of good practice in the sector alongside research into the tangible benefits of arts and health. The report is an attempt to demonstrate the significant contribution [of the arts] to improving the lives, health and wellbeing of patients, service users and carers, as well as those who work in health and the arts.
