An in-depth analysis of theatres social impact has attempted to identify the factors which can help companies achieve specific personal, communal or political purposes. The research, commissioned and recently published by Arts Council England, claims that artistic excellence, a commitment to evaluation and good governance, the use of participatory creative processes and strong cultural partnerships were all likely to help theatre to have the greatest effect on society at large.
Using detailed analysis of projects by ten theatre organisations from across Britain, the study used interviews with theatre practitioners, audiences and funders to assess impact. The research was conducted by Dominic Shellard, Professor of English Literature at Sheffield University and follows his economic impact survey of English theatre, published in 2004.
