The Government has given the go ahead for the development of a National Skills Academy for the Live Performing Arts and Music to be based in Thurrock, Thames Gateway. The academy will offer specialised training in technical skills for the creative industries and is being developed by the sector skills council, Creative & Cultural Skills, in conjunction with industry bodies and employers including the National Theatre, English National Opera and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
The performing arts academy now has the green light to join academies in other sectors, including the nuclear, hospitality and chemical industries, which are due to open early in 2008. The Department for Education and Skills has earmarked £7m for the academy with matching funding expected from the industry.
