News – Over 50 art
London-based artist, Chris Stevens has been announced as the overall winner of the £5,000 50 over 50 prize the first ever open art prize for UK artists aged 50 and over. His work, Versace (pictured) was selected from over 1,800 entries from across UK. The 50 artists judged to have best demonstrated vitality and creativity, and challenged perceptions about the work of older artists, were selected for the shortlist for the prize.
Both professional and amateur artists are represented, many of whom have come to art later in life and use retirement as an opportunity to focus on artistic education and practice, or have come to art following a life-changing personal event. An exhibition of their work, which tackled subject matter ranging from global warming and management of the countryside to communication between generations, is now showing at the University of Brighton Gallery.
