News – decibel Award
Fifteen names have been put forward for the shortlist of the second decibel Award for Artists. The award, which is designed to raise the profile of Black and minority ethnic (BME) visual artists working in Britain, boasts a total prize fund of £180,000 the largest of any visual arts award in the UK. A panel of international critics and curators will now decide which of the nominated artists, including Harold Offeh with his mixed media installation Being Mammy 1 commissioned by Picture This (pictured), will be among the six to receive £30,000 each.
decibel has also announced plans for its third Performing Arts Showcase to take place in Birmingham in September 2007. The showcase, featuring dance, theatre, music, live art, circus and street arts by BME artists based in England, is expected to host up to 400 promoters and programmers from the UK and abroad. Regional artist surgeries are currently being staged around the country to encourage organisations to apply to be included.
