News – Artsmark approved
The first large-scale evaluation of Artsmark, the Arts Council England (ACE) award scheme for schools that offer wide ranging experiences in art, dance, drama and music, has concluded that the scheme is achieving its principal aims of developing arts provision in schools and raising the profile of arts education. The research, led by consultants Matthews Millman Ltd, has found that schools that achieve the Artsmark accreditation show evidence not only of an increased volume of arts activity, but also of work to remedy gaps in their provision.
They are also successful at placing arts subjects more centrally within the context of the wider curriculum. Since the first awards were made in January 2001, ACE has received over 4,000 Artsmark applications from schools across England, and 13% of all schools currently hold an Artsmark award.
