News – Groundwork UK wins Peoples Millions
Artworks and murals are set to brighten up some of the countrys most disadvantaged neighbourhoods following the announcement that Groundwork UK is this years winner of the Peoples Millions award, selected by viewers of GMTV to receive £1.5m from the Big Lottery Fund. The award, made for Groundworks Safe & Sound initiative, will help to transform 25 areas around the UK into clean, safe and green spaces.
Sensory gardens, childrens play areas, skate parks and nature reserves will be created from Northumberland to Newquay and Belfast to Brixton, and around 5,000 volunteers of all ages will be involved in improving the quality of life in their own communities. Almost 20,000 votes were cast across the UK to secure Groundworks win. Later this year, ITV viewers will be given the chance to award a further 90 grants of £50,000. The deadline for applications for funding to be awarded in the next round of the scheme is 18 May.
