The Theatres Advisory Council (TAC), which was set up in 1962 as an umbrella forum for members of the theatre profession, has voted to abolish itself in its current form, and will cease to function at the end of March next year.
Over the years TAC has provided information on the UK?s theatre building stock, organised conferences and seminars, helped those concerned with theatre preservation by providing expert advice and speakers, and lobbied Government and local authorities. In the seventies and early eighties, it helped to save from demolition or change of use some of the finest theatres in the country and campaigned for legislation which led to the creation of The Theatres Trust. The Council has taken the decision to wind up the organisation, in the recognition that the Theatres Trust and the National Campaign for the Arts have now taken on responsibility for these roles.
