Work has begun on the Black Box, a new performance space in Belfasts Cathedral Quarter which will bridge the gap before the opening of a new £9.2m city centre arts centre in 2010. The Black Box will accommodate 275 people in cabaret-style seating and provide a performance space for evening use, as well as a development and rehearsal space for new theatre work and other artforms by day.

It aims to address a gap in arts provision for younger, less mainstream audiences in Belfast, and also to enhance the potential and profile of the Cathedral Quarter, which is already home to more than 50 cultural organisations. Belfast City Council is investing £225,000 in the project, and £50,000 has been awarded by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.
