A national forum for dance is to be established in Wales after a report by the Welsh Assembly raised concerns that dance was not seen as a priority for funding and suffers from a lack of strategic direction. The current network of regional dance forums will be merged to form one national body and a new strategy will be developed by the Arts Council of Wales to encourage participation in dance.

The report by the Assemblys Culture Committee found that while the professional dance sector is active and vibrant with companies like Earthfall, India Dance Wales (pictured) and Diversions raising the profile of the artform, the community dance sector is overstretched and dance provision in schools is patchy throughout the country. The fresh focus on dance will be supported by an additional £125,000 a year from the Welsh Assembly Government.
