Plans for the development of a state-of-the-art gallery for Turner Contemporary alongside the harbour wall in Margate have been axed by Kent County Council, in the face of projected costs which have risen from £30m to £50m.
An alternative scheme for major cultural, business and leisure facilities for East Kent, which will include Turner Contemporary, is now being developed by the County Council working with Thanet District Council. The South East England Development Agency and Arts Council England, South East, each of which had committed around £4m to the Turner Contemporary project, will be working closely with Kent County Council to explore new options for a building that will meet their respective needs.
