Irelands national theatre, the Abbey, is to have its e3.4m debts wiped out with a one-off grant to get the beleaguered Dublin venue back on its feet. The Irish government has allocated e5.23m of additional funding to the Arts Council of which e4m will go to the Abbey to clear the debt and overhaul the organisations management structures.
Earlier this year, auditors for the Abbey discovered a e2m black hole in the theatres accounts which resulted in the Artistic and Managing Directors and the board of the organisation being replaced.
