Mark Ball, the Director of Fierce Earth Ltd, the production company behind Birminghams Fierce! Festival, has been named Young Director of the Year in the Institute of Directors annual awards ceremony. This is the first time the award has been given to the director of an arts organisation.

Actors appearing in the Sherman Theatres Christmas show, Merlin and the Cave of Dreams, have appeared at Cardiffs Cineworld cinema (pictured) to promote a ticket deal focused on screenings of the latest Harry Potter film. The two venues have collaborated in marketing family-specific events through a range of advertising and crossover initiatives.

The creative industries in the east of England are set to benefit from a new European-funded business support scheme. Developed by Anglia Ruskin University, Screen East and Theatre Resource, the Creative Industries Business Improvement Partnership will provide experienced consultants to work with small businesses to analyse their activities and produce company training plans. The Simple Guide to Licensing for Circus and Street Arts has been produced by Arts Council England in conjunction with Equity, the Circus Arts Forum and the Independent Street Arts Network, to help those working in circus and street arts navigate the complexities of the new Licensing Act.

Peter Doran, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven, has won the inaugural Manager of the Year Award at this years TMA Theatre Awards. The awards for Most Welcoming Theatre and Achievement in Marketing went to Bradford Theatres; The Hall for Cornwall won the Presenting Theatre award; and the Oval House in Kennington won the Eclipse Award for cultural diversity.

New research, commissioned by Brighton Dome and Festival and carried out by Sussex Arts Marketing, reveals how smaller businesses can benefit from sponsoring local arts activities. The research evaluates the In the Bag scheme, which offers sponsorship packages starting from £1,000, to enable smaller businesses to come together as a collective in support of the Brighton Festival. Three reports about artform classification, data ownership and standard box office system reports are now available on a new website launched by Audiences Data UK, a joint initiative between the four UK arts councils which aims to help people who work in the arts to make better use of information about audiences. The website also includes details of other research projects currently in progress.

An art exhibition inspired by climate change will be staged in Oxford this month. The Ice Garden features sound, light and sculptural installation work by leading artists from Cape Farewell, a group of eighteen artists who, earlier this year, travelled with scientists to the Arctic to experience directly the impacts of global warming.

Liverpool Culture Company has published a report into the impact of the Creative Communities programme of events, launched as part of the build up to the citys year as Capital of Culture 2008. Over a million people have participated in events with more than 2,000 artists in the first two years of the scheme.
