Following negotiations with Her Majesty?s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), museums and heritage groups have agreed ways in which gift aid packages may be promoted to the public from April next year. Changes in tax law mean that museums wishing to claim Gift Aid on entrance charges will need to ask visitors to pay an additional 10% on top of the entrance fee or to pay for an annual membership.
HMRC has agreed with The Attractions Gift Aid Liaison Group that museums may promote a total admission charge which includes the additional 10% provided that the normal admission charge is clearly displayed. Mark Taylor, Director of the Museums Association, said, ?The challenge will be selling the idea of giving more than the admission price. The strength of the idea and the branding are very important for selling this concept to the visitor.?
