A lack of ?fire in the belly? of voluntary organisations has prompted a crisis of confidence among philanthropic trusts and foundations, according to a new report. Stepping up the Stairs, commissioned by the Carnegie UK Trust, assesses the state of giving in Britain and looks at the issues facing charitable foundations and the sector they support.
The report identifies an increasing dependence on statutory funding among voluntary organisations which, together with uncertainty about the future of Lottery funding, is leading to an unsustainable future. Calling for a greater investment in ideas and the ?big issues? facing the philanthropic sector, the report offers detailed suggestions for a ?multi-disciplinary centre for research on philanthropy.?
