A new site has been identified for Ireland?s troubled National Theatre, the Abbey, just a few hundred yards from the current building. The announcement, which brings to an end a five-year search for a new venue, brought some relief from a stream of bad news that has dogged the organisation over recent months, including the resignation of the Theatre?s Artistic and Managing Directors after the discovery of a near ?1m black hole in its accounts, (AP issue 98, 23 May).
Ireland?s Arts Council has said that ?considerable progress? has been made in the investigations into the theatre?s financial management with specific recommendations on a revised governance structure likely to be made in the next few weeks.
