Museums need to do more to get their collections on display and to improve access to the public, according to a new report, ?Collections for the Future?, which argues that museums need to share collections and establish more temporary exhibitions. Based on a six-month inquiry by the Museums Association (MA), the report pulls no punches in demanding that the sector work more closely together and focus resources to better engage with the public.
It makes a number of specific suggestions including plans for the MA to work more closely with the Higher Education sector in tackling shortfalls in expertise, and a pilot programme to offer curators to underused collections. However, closer co-operation between museums is urged with the report warning of ?unwelcome solutions? being imposed on the sector if it fails to use collections to engage the public: ?Museums will need to work together to make an entitlement to collections a reality for everyone.?
