A Sector Workforce Development Plan outlining priorities for personal and organisational development in the arts sector for the next three years has been launched by Metier, the National Training Organisation for the arts and entertainment industries.
Culminating from three years of research and extensive consultation with practitioners, and written to help the new Learning and Skills Councils and Regional Development Agencies better understand the needs of the arts sector, the Plan, identifies six priority areas for action over the next three years. More non-graduate entry to the sector is given as a priority, as is greater support to ease the transition from education to employment. The need for business support structures for graduates moving into self-employment or contract working is highlighted, as is the development and delivery of new work-based qualifications. The Plan also highlights the barriers to the take-up of existing training provisions, and the skills and knowledge shortages that characterise the sector. Learning targets have been set for 20% of subsidised arts organisations achieving the Investors in People standard, and 50% of the sector undertaking 45 minutes of Continuing Professional Development per week.
