Mill Arts Centre changes council ownership

Banbury’s multi-use arts centre has been bought from Oxfordshire County Council by Cherwell District Council for £1, in the knowledge that the building needs £250k worth of repairs. The deal will help the Mill’s external grant applications by providing the building with a secure, long-term lease.

Derby to redevelop Assembly Rooms in new £24m plan

National Theatre Wales programme to tackle accusations of English bias

The venue says 2019’s programme will highlight the richness and depth of Welsh talent, following well-publicised concerns from more than 200 actors and playwrights that National Theatre Wales (NTW) has not been producing enough shows or championing homegrown performers. Artistic Director Kully Thiarai said she hopes a free public event in March will bring people together to consider “what theatre needs to be in Wales and what NTW’s role is.” 

Library numbers continue to plummet

A survey by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (Cipfa) finds that 130 public libraries have closed in the last year, continuing a trend that has been ongoing since 2010. Cipfa’s CEO said libraries were “a canary in the coal mine for what is happening across the local government sector”.
