The first 13 recipients of the first round of the Women Make Music fund have been announced, with the aim of highlighting the gender gap in the music industry and encouraging collaborations between organisations and creators who have not previously worked together. Following revelations that, in 2010, women made up just 14% of the writer membership of the Performing Rights Society of composers, songwriters and music publishers (PRS for Music) and that at last year’s Proms concerts women wrote less than 5% of the music performed, the PRS launched a new funding opportunity for women who are making outstanding music in the UK. The music that these women are creating includes a song cycle based on Portuguese poetry, a new piece of music for ten choirs and a composition for outdoor circus performances. They will be premiered in locations across the UK.
