The Chief Executive of Arts Council England (ACE) is leaving to join BBC Radio 3 as Controller. Previously a Civil Servant at the DCMS, Alan Davey, who joined ACE in November 2007, will remain at the Arts Council for three more months. He will fill the vacancy left at the BBC by former Controller Roger Wright, who was also Director, BBC Proms. Wright left after 15 years with the BBC, to take up the post of Chief Executive of Aldeburgh Music.

Announcing his departure, Davey said: “When I was approached about applying to be Controller of Radio 3 I knew that it would be the only job I could conceive of leaving the Arts Council for. Well, I eventually said yes to applying, and now I can confirm that I have got the job.” He continued: “My time at the Arts Council has been brilliant, not least because it has been such a privilege to work with an endlessly creative sector, as well as with people here at the Arts Council itself… I am more passionate than ever about the power that arts and culture has to transform lives and why it is so important that each and every one of us has the opportunity to experience that for ourselves. We've done some brilliant things and there is more to do. And I know that all your skills and enthusiasm will make sure we do those things.” Commenting on Davey’s appointment, Sir Peter Bazalgette, Chair of Arts Council England, said: “…we are losing an exceptionally able leader and someone we have loved working with. I’m sorry Alan is leaving us, but I have to congratulate him on his brilliant new job. Alan leaves a great legacy for the Arts Council – a brilliant team, strong leadership from the Executive Board and a clear roadmap in Achieving great art and culture for everyone.”

The timeline for appointing a new Chief Executive will be announced in due course.
