National Gallery director Gabriele Finaldi outlines his vision for the institution, saying it needs to draw more heavily on people's generosity to survive.

The National Gallery needs more wealthy donors to boost its collection in an age when the cost of paintings can exceed £100 million, its new director has said as he pledged to maintain free entry for all.Dr Gabriele Finaldi, who took over the British institution last month, said philanthropy will be vital if the gallery is to acquire more masterpieces. He urged the government to consider more tax breaks as a way of encouraging rich individuals to make donations.
