Storyteller Debs Newbold shows us her week: devising, performing, rambling and enjoying a huge bath. Debs NewboldSwipe / click to begin Tuesday – Roundhouse, CamdenAs a freelance artist, my working week can start on any day. This ‘week’ started on a Tuesday with a day’s rehearsal at the legendary Roundhouse for the Lost in Blue spring tour. How to re-jig my show’s delicately constructed final section to pick up the pace a bit? Aargh! Here I am, probably appealing to the spirit of Patti Smith for help (I saw her here last year). I need a cup of tea. Wednesday – Cecil Sharp House, CamdenRehearsals continue up the road at Cecil Sharp House, but today I am not alone. My director John Wright, founder of Told by an Idiot, genius provocateur and guide, has joined me. After a cuppa and a big chinwag, a final-section-rejig-solution presents itself on the wall. A bit like Vincent van Gogh does in the show. Ta-da! Thursday – HomeAll packed for a jaunt south to perform in Somerset on Friday, at 11pm I attempt to get a handle on my current 2016 gig timetable, while watching House of Cards on Netflix… Friday – Village hall, SomersetA typical rural touring scene: Village hall with a friendly buzz, early-arriving ticket holders are being fed while some bag the seat they want for the show well in advance, the local promoter, chef and committee member hover, on alert, by the door. This turned out to be a cracking night. Saturday – Day off, SomersetTime for a Somerset ramble before heading homeward. Sunday – Big bath, LincolnshireAfter delivering a course for teachers, 'Exploring Storytelling to Support Literacy', for Shakespeare's Globe, here I am, shattered. In Lincolnshire. In the world's most massive hotel bath. Monday – Tas and Tales, LondonBack in London, I’m recording a CD of my dark tales with my dear friend, and master of the twiddly dials, Tas today. We go back a long way. We’re both Globe theatre affiliates, both Shakespeare lovers. Both busy freelancers, hardworking optimists, artistic multi-taskers. Family, basically.
