Jane Lillystone talks about the contribution of The Wilson gallery to a step-change in Cheltenham's cultural life - and demonstrates how to charm the local press.

Jane Lillystone wants to make a “shot of culture” as easily available to the people of Cheltenham as their daily takeaway coffee. And so far it seems to be working.

We meet just a day before the first anniversary of the opening of The Wilson, the radically refurbished art gallery and museum in Clarence Street. Sitting in the Friends Gallery in the museum, the borough council’s arts and tourism manager says a year ago her main emotion was fatigue. But also excitement.

“I was feeling very tired,” she laughed. “And also very excited. “I was nervous because we were opening to the public. I hoped the public would respond to the building the way people who were coming in to look round; we had contractors, designers and artists who were coming round saying: ‘It’s world class.
