The Director of the National Gallery, NICHOLAS PENNY, is to retire. The announcement comes a week after the Director of the National Portrait Gallery, SANDY NAIRNE, revealed he will be stepping down. Under Penny, who took up his role in 2008, the National Gallery staged the most successful exhibition in its history: Leonardo da Vinci, Painter at the Court of Milan. He will stay in office until a successor is appointed.
